Abstract
Dissipation in solid friction is studied as a function of the elastic prope rties of the two sliding surfaces. The two surfaces have been constructed b y embedding macroscopic asperities in an elastic layer. It is shown that wh en the surfaces are rigid the energy dissipation is smaller than in the ela stic case. The scaling of the friction force as a function of the asperity number is also studied.
