NASA's broadband satellite networking research

ATM is currently considered the primary WAN technology with Internet protoc ols providing the routing and transport requirements. Another WAN technolog y being considered is packet over SONET. Using the Advanced Communication T echnology Satellite, NASA has demonstrated and is experimenting with these technologies. This article summarizes some of the major completed and ongoi ng experiments and demonstrations performed using commercial standard proto cols such as ATM and TCP/IP over broadband satellite networks.
