R. Rampaul et al., Papillary thyroid adenocarcinoma arising in a thyroglossal tract remnant following excision of a thyroglossal cyst: The importance of the Sistrunk procedure, INT J CL PR, 53(4), 1999, pp. 316-317
Carcinoma of the thyroglossal tract is a rarity - over the past 85 years on
ly 160 cases have been reported. We report the first case of carcinoma aris
ing in a thyroglossal tract remnant 10 years after simple excision of a thy
roglossal cyst. This case highlights the importance of the Sistrunk procedu
re, (the removal of the entire thyroglossal tract) for preventing not only
cyst recurrence, sinus and fistula formation, but also the occurrence of ca
rcinoma.
