Sixty-one LIS teachers, identified as "superior" by twenty-six LIS deans an
d directors, speak in behavioral terms about the way they plan, teach, and
deal with students. Then six veteran observers of the LIS teaching scene pa
rticipate in a listserv discussion and reveal their views about superior LI
S teaching, remediation for poor teachers, and adult learner issues. Demons
trated respect for students, joy in teaching, and knowledge of the current
scene are paramount ingredients in the recipe for outstanding teaching, acc
ording to the contributors. Poor teachers may improve, but do not achieve "
superior" status, as a rule, and not all adult learners are learning; some
are credentialing.
