Consultation and evaluation are often inseparable in complex change initiat ives. They need to be integrated. Journey analysis provides a framework for their integration Its key sensitizing concepts are expressed in familiar l anguage derived from the metaphor of the "change journey." These concepts f ocus attention on key developmental phases in the change process. Consultant evaluators facilitate each successive iteration of the journey a nalysis. They promote collaborative problem solving and mutual learning. Th ey document lesson drawing, knowledge and model development, learning, and continuous quality improvement. When change journeys are documented, benefi ts accrue. For example, knowledge and theory development are facilitated. S cale-up efforts in other communities may be accelerated. The preparation of future consultant evaluators may be enhanced. Above all, people in need re ceive assistance and support.
