Consultation and evaluation are often inseparable in complex change initiat
ives. They need to be integrated. Journey analysis provides a framework for
their integration Its key sensitizing concepts are expressed in familiar l
anguage derived from the metaphor of the "change journey." These concepts f
ocus attention on key developmental phases in the change process.
Consultant evaluators facilitate each successive iteration of the journey a
nalysis. They promote collaborative problem solving and mutual learning. Th
ey document lesson drawing, knowledge and model development, learning, and
continuous quality improvement. When change journeys are documented, benefi
ts accrue. For example, knowledge and theory development are facilitated. S
cale-up efforts in other communities may be accelerated. The preparation of
future consultant evaluators may be enhanced. Above all, people in need re
ceive assistance and support.
