The work presents recent developments of chosen aspects of optical fiber te
chnology at the Research Production Department of Fiber Optics (FOD) at Bia
glass Co. The modified multicrucible (MMC) technology of optical fibers, re
ferred shortly to, throughout this work, as the MMC process was used to obt
ain several kinds of usable optical fibers for sensors and functional compo
nents of fiber microoptics. The MMC fibers, which are analyzed in this pape
r, are triple-core, double-core and twin-core, also quadruple-core ones. Th
ese fibers belong to the broader family of multicore optical fibers (MOFs).
Such fibers introduce a few of new possibilities to the transmissive or se
nsory photonic system design: wave and core multiplexing, internal in-fiber
interference and multichannel property. These features are subject of rese
arch in this work. Some of the unique properties of MOFs seem to have been
shown (calculated and measured) for the first time.
