There are significant differences in the multielectron dissociative ionizat
ion (MEDI) of N-2 by 100-fs-long laser pulses (intensity 10(15) W cm(-2)) u
sing linearly and circularly polarized light, with substantial suppression
of ionization in the latter case. Enhanced ionization occurs in both instan
ces at an internuclear distance (r) of similar to 2.2 Angstrom, with an inc
reased propensity for MEDI at larger r values with circularly polarized lig
ht.
