Abstract
Kawasaki Steel's two integrated steel works, Chiba and Mizushima, produce h igh quality slabs while keeping high productivity. The steelmaking technolo gies which provide the high quality and competitive slabs are : hot metal pretreatment for obtaining the cost-minimum phosphorus content in the melt charged to BOFs; optimized operation to produce clean steel; continuous casting technology for eliminating the origin of surface defects of sheet products, e.g. molten steel flow control in the casting mould and direct rolling without any scarfing.
