High production on slab casters necessitates flying tundish change while ca
sting at creep speed, causing permanent deformation and misalignment of sup
porting rolls. Simultaneously strand bulging is enhanced. Misalignment, ben
t rolls and bulging deteriorate considerably product quality as well as the
strand mechanical support. Reciprocating strand technology (REST) is appli
ed on the SIDERAR slab easter during flying tundish change, thus reducing t
he above problems. The tine for tundish exchange can be extended up to 10 m
in and more if necessary. The aim is to have sufficient time for safe tundi
sh exchange without overloading the casting machine and deteriorating stran
d quality.
