We present an analysis of boundary effects on soliton motion in one-di
mensional discrete nonlinear Schrodinger systems. In an effective poin
t particle framework, we derive effective potentials induced, respecti
vely, by fixed and free boundaries for the integrable case. We establi
sh an effective Hamiltonian that captures the soliton dynamics under t
he combined effects of the finiteness of the lattice size and the disc
reteness of nonintegrable systems. Our direct numerical simulations de
monstrate that these potentials can describe the soliton motion excell
ently.
