Abstract
This review focuses on the relevance of object relations theory to short-te rm dynamic psychotherapy (STDP). From diverse theoretical and research lite ratures, a small number of core theoretical concepts and assessment dimensi ons are identified. Specific assessment methods are also highlighted. Resea rch evidence concerning a particular object relations concept (quality of o bject relations) and a corresponding interview scale (Quality of Object Rel ations Scale) that has emerged from a series of psychotherapy clinical tria ls is presented in support of the relevance of object relations theory to S TDP. Clinical implications and future research directions are considered. ( C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
