Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the influence on bovine spermat ozoa of nitroglycerin (1,2,3-propanetriol trinitrate), which is known for its stimulating effect on the cGMP pathway. Results revealed that the motility of spermatozoa from the nitroglycerin-treated samples was significantly improved compared with the control samples and this imp rovement was demonstrable for up to 2 hours. Meanwhile, live sperm per centage and the percentage of spermatozoa with intact acrosomes were n ot affected. In addition, significant improvement in the cervical mucu s penetrability of spermatozoa from the treated samples could be detec ted. It could, therefore, be inferred that cGMP plays an important rol e in enhancing bovine sperm motility.
