Experience has shown that leg to mounting plate joints are among the strong
est joints used in table construction and are particularly well-suited for
the construction of thin profile tables which are used in libraries and sim
ilar use areas where leg clearance beneath the table is of particular impor
tance. In spite of their apparent value in these applications or in any app
lication requiring robust heavy-duty construction, little quantitative data
is available concerning their performance which can be used in the product
engineering of tables. A brief study Mras undertaken, accordingly, to obta
in quantitative estimates of the strength of this joint and to establish vi
tal construction parameters. Results of the study verified that leg to moun
ting plate joints are, indeed, quite strong and provide a means of construc
ting heavy-duty tables which can be shipped in a knockdown condition and ye
t be easily reassembled at the point of use.
