In this paper we report about some of the major developments of Ag sheathed
Bi(2223) tapes that are actually under study in view of a possible practic
al application of these conductors. Efforts on improving the tape behavior
in presence of alternating currents and high magnetic fields have to be don
e together with a severe optimization of the Powder-In-Tube method. A clear
reduction of the magnetic AC losses is observed by AC susceptibility measu
rements performed on twisted Bi(2223) tapes prepared at the University of G
eneva, with a resistive barrier capable of reducing the coupling losses bet
ween filaments. Finally, we report on multifilamentary tapes developed with
a special configuration that can be of great interest when a magnetic fiel
d is applied to the tape at a significant angle with respect to the a-b pla
nes of the superconductor.
