Abstract
The scatterers observed in the Li2B4O7 crystals grown in the optically usef ul direction showed Mie scattering. The polarization mode of the scattering light depends on the relative configuration of the incident beam and the c rystal direction. The scattering sources were proven to be sub-micron bubbl es which can be attributed to water in the melt. The scattering-free Li2B4O 7 crystals 2 " in diameter and 70 mm in length were successfully grown in d ry air. The formation mechanism of bubbles was discussed.
