COMPARATIVE-ANALYSIS OF MPEG AND ATM MULTIPLEXING FUNCTIONS FOR MULTIMEDIA INTERACTIVE SERVICES

This paper gives the motivation behind the specification of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards, and describes their system layers' syntactical stru cture, without considering the audio or video specific coding features . As only the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) is provided with functional ities similar to those of ATM, a comparative analysis of MPEG-2 TS wit h respect to ATM is carried out, on the basis of significant performan ce parameters like jitter and multiplexing efficiency. The paper puts emphasis on the potential of MPEG-2 and ATM to implement the transmiss ion convergence sublayer of large capacity access systems. Signalling, network management, service discrimination, routing and addressing ca pabilities are investigated.
