Abstract
A molecular phylogeny of the subfamily Antilopinae was determined using the two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes cytochrome b and cytochrome c oxidase III. The tribe Antilopini is monophyletic with Antidorcas marsupialis and L itocranius walleri basal to the large genus Gazella. Antilope cervicapra fa lls within Gazella. This placement would either make Gazella paraphyletic o r require that the genus name Gazella be changed to Antilope. Gazella thoms onii is supported as a subspecies of G. rufifrons. Most members of the trib e Neotragni are sister species to the Antilopini, but the Neotragini is ren dered paraphyletic by a deep placement of Neotragus moschatus. (C) 1999 Aca demic Press.
