Five lignicolous mangrove fungi (Hyyoxlon oceanicum, Julella avicenniae, Li
gnincola laevis, Savoryella lignicola and Trematosphaeria mangrovei) produc
ed extracellular endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase and beta-glucosidase when
cultivated under static conditions in a defined liquid growth medium. Agit
ation of cultures completely repressed enzyme production. Cellulase product
ion by H. oceanicum was 2-5 fold higher compared to other strains. Increasi
ng salinity generally resulted in reduced enzyme production although respon
ses varied, but J. avicenniae appeared relatively unaffected by salinity wi
thin the range 0-3.4%.
