Renovascular hypertension can be caused by renal artery stenosis (atheroscl
erosis or fibromuscular dysplasia), arteriitis, embolism, aneurysm, tumors,
cysts, neurofibromatosis and artery stenosis after renal transplantation.
This type of hypertension is probably based on renal hypoperfusion followed
by stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. The choice of
diagnostic procedures includes Color duplex. ultrasonography and captoptil
scintigraphy as screening methods. Arterial digital subtraction angiography
is the golden standard for evaluation of renal artery stenosis, spiral-CT
angiography and MRI angiography are also suitable for diagnosis of renal ar
tery stenosis. Angioplasty is the treatment of choice in hemodynamic-releva
nt artery stenosis. Surgical treatment is indicated in special cases. In or
der to avoid possible complications of invasive diagnostic procedures inter
ventional treatment management of renovascular hypertension should be perfo
rmed in clinical centers for renal diseases and hypertension.
