Abstract
The experimental evidence for orbital ordering in LaMnO3 and La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 is critically reexamined in the light of realistic calculations based on m ultiple scattering theory and finite difference method for the resonant x-r ay scattered intensity at a forbidden ref lection. It is found that the dip ole resonant x-ray diffraction at the Mn K-edge is not a suitable technique for the direct observation of the orbital ordering in the considered compo unds.
