A sufficient condition for linear stability of dissipative mechanical syste
ms with circulatory forces is derived. According to this condition, dissipa
tive systems which are more than marginally stable without gyroscopic and c
irculatory forces, remain stable after the addition of weak but finite gyro
scopic and circulatory forces. This condition has important applications in
