The total punchthrough probability and the spatial properties of showers in
duced by 70-GeV protons in a steel absorber have been measured at a depth b
etween 1.5 and 3.0 m, The measurements have been performed by using large-a
rea scintillation counters. The experimental data from these measurements h
ave been compared with the results of calculations based on the GEANT 3.21
code employing the GHEISHA and FLUKA generators to simulate hadron-nucleus
interactions.
