Abstract
Significant advances have been made in defining the transcription cascade t hat is responsible for the early steps of pituitary formation and the envir onmental signals that induce, pattern and specify the pituitary gland and i ts cell types. It is now possible to outline the molecular mechanisms under lying the formation of the pituitary gland, as well as the initial developm ent of organ-specific cell types.
