Abstract
In combination with the transfer matrix method and the concept of an equiva lent attenuated coefficient, a first-order perturbation theory is proposed to study the leaky modes in planar optical waveguides. Simplified analytica l expressions of the perturbed propagation constants are presented in a mor e explicit and general manner compared to the existing theory.
