2-D numerical simulation was used to study the quench evolutions of high T-
c superconducting pancake coils made of BSCCO/Ag tape. The self-protection
inductance, under which a pancake coil of persistent mode is able to be sel
f-protective, was obtained for protection design. In a persistent LTS/HTS h
ybrid magnet with passive protection, quench evolution was studied for the
HTS pancake coil with different shunt resistors, and the feasibility of pas
sive protection for the HTS coil was also discussed. The results show that
passive protection is also feasible for the HTS pancake coil if subdivision
s and shunt resistors are reasonably designed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Lt
