It has long been recognised that the size of a rock sample can have a signi
ficant impact on the strength recorded of the sample. In this paper the sca
le dependence caused by the presence of larger weaknesses when the sample v
olume increases is investigated. An approach based on linear elastic fractu
re mechanics is proposed to define the behaviour and results are presented.
