A. Aguilar et B. Ramirez, TELEVISION VIDEOTAPE SCENES - VALIDATION OF ITS EMOTIONAL CONTENT, Revista latinoamericana de psicología, 29(2), 1997, pp. 287-301
The emotional content of 90 television videotape escenes was validated
. Judges were 56 undergraduate psychology students, all female, 19-25
years old. They observed the scenes and marked in a response scale wha
t emotion was being presented, and the degree of intensity of that emo
tion. Results were analyzed using an analysis of variance of repited m
easures. It was found that there were significant differences in the d
egree of intensity with which the emotions of joy, anger, sadness, fea
r, and indifference, were represented. A t test was applied in order t
o compare the highest average result of the most representative emotio
n of each scene, with the next one; the two most representative scenes
of each emotion were selected, in order to be used (in another study)
as a way of inducing emotional states. It is recommended the use of s
cenes specifically produced for the research studies in order to have
the ''copyright'' of the videos. Commercial TV scenes are copyright pr
otected. The new videotapes, scientifically validated, can be produced
in the same way as psychological tests and other psychometric instrum
ents. The validation process can be used in the evaluation of artistic
works.
