The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) ions in aqueous solutions under exposure
to Co-60 gamma-radiation and electron beams was studied depending on pH, c
oncentration, absorbed dose, etc. The effects of some additives and the nat
ure of the gas that saturates the solution on the radiolysis of this system
were also examined, The conditions for the almost complete reduction of Cr
(VI) at absorbed doses of the order of several kilograys were found; this i
s a prerequisite for the use of radiation treatment for the removal of hexa
valent chromium from water.
