Abstract
Changes in the molecular-weight distribution of dextran macromolecules upon gamma-irradiation of dilute aqueous solutions of this polysaccharide (20 g /dm(3)) in the dose range 0-0.26 MGy were examined using viscometry and gel permeation chromatography. The molecular-weight distribution of dextran ch anged in the course of irradiation as a result of both degradation and cros slinking of macrochains: the longer the macrochains, the more profound the degradation. The role of the transient products of water radiolysis in the formation of the products of both degradation and crosslinking of the macro chains was found.
