The formation mechanism and its behavior of the drops from a novel impeller
which is equipped with static mixers on a circular plate are studied exper
imentally. Depending on the revolution of the impeller, the mechanism of dr
op formation changes from single drops at the end of the mixers or single d
rops by breakup of the liquid jets to those within the mixers. The distribu
tion profile of the drop size moves from unimodal to bimodal large size, an
d further to unimodal small size. It is found that, in the region of higher
revolutions of the impeller, the Sauter mean diameter of the drops is corr
elated with the -0.59 power of Weber number based on revolutions and the di
ameter of impeller.
