Potential of a central muscle relaxant tizanidine to alleviate concomitant
cardialgia was studied in 30 patients (11 men and 19 women, mean age 45,2 y
ears) with psyche-vegetative or myofascial syndromes after exclusion of car
diovascular causes of chest pain. Control group comprised 14 healthy person
s. Pain was assessed both subjectively and objectively using visual analog
scales, questionnaires and palpation. The state of vegetative nervous syste
m and psychic status were evaluated by rating questionnaires and tests of S
pilberger (detection of reactive and personality anxiety) and Bek (evaluati
on of depression). Studies were done before and after administration of tiz
anidine (6-8 mg/day for 20 days). Regression of clinical sings of the cardi
algia syndrome and psyche-vegetative disturbances was observed after treatm
ent Effect of therapy was considered good, satisfactory and unsatisfactory
in 33, 47 and 20% of patients, respectively Thus the use of a central muscl
e relaxant tizanidine in patients with psyche-vegetative and myofascial syn
dromes and concomitant cardialgia was associated with clinical improvement.
