Abstract
During the phased upgrading of the Heavy Section Mill (HSM) at British Stee l's Scunthorpe works, FactoryLink was chosen to provide SCADA (monitoring a nd control) facilities. The HSM is now one of the most modern and efficient mills of its type, with a capacity of around 8,000 tonnes per week (depend ent on product type) and the capability of producing over 1,000 different p roducts of the highest quality. The majority of its production is sheet pil ing for construction walling with the balance being made up of structural s ections, The market pressure to shorter production runs is reflected in the fact that the HSM now rolls around eight different sections per week, almo st double that prior to the mill refurbishment.
