The direct addition of sulfur or selenium to 2-nitrophenyl selenide ions (A
rSe-) in N,N-dimethylacetamide leads to the formation of ArSeS- or ArSe2- s
pecies, which have been characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometry coupled w
ith volammetry. The nucleophilic substitution of benzyl bromide by ArSeS- i
ons yields selenenyl sulfide ArSeSCH2Ph as the major product.
