Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is characterised by proliferation and fibros
is of retroperitoneal tissue. This leads to ureteral and pelvic obstruction
by fibrotic masses. These structures may infiltrate up to the mediastinum
and the pleura. Association with vasculitis and inflammatory rheumatic dise
ases can be observerd. MRT is superior to CT in diagnostic requirement. Med
ical treatment with tamoxifen and steroids may be effective additional to s
urgery. Although the pathogenesis remains unknown RPF seems to be an autoim
mune disease. Malignant tumors must be taken in consideration in all cases.
