The manner by which helioseismic date are obtained and analysed to diagnose
the interior structure and rotation of the Sun is briefly described. The p
rincipal results of the analysis pertinent to solar neutrino production are
presented; they have constrained standard theoretical models of the Sun in
such a way as to prevent them from explaining the neutrino flux measuremen
ts without recourse to neutrino transitions. However, standard solar models
do not represent the entire class of plausible models, and indeed they suf
fer the deficiency of being unstable. Models in which the products of the n
uclear reactions are redistributed in the core may represent the Sun more c
losely, and should at least be considered and tested further in the process
of developing a reliable model of the neutrino source.
