Abstract
The influence of yttrium introduced by ion implantation or by sol-gel coati ngs on the oxidation of pure iron has been studied at 973 K under p(O-2) = 0.04 Pa. The oxide scales were examined using a wide range of analytical te chniques. The addition of yttrium by ion implantation or by sol-gel coating s significantly improved the oxidation resistance of pure ir on. This effec t depends upon the introduction mode of yttrium on the surface.
