Oxidation of nonamethylmetallocenecarbaldehydes, C5Me5MC5Me4CHO (M = Ru or
Os) and the related mu-acyl clusters C5Me5MC5Me4COOs3(CO)(10)H with silver
salts afforded eta(6)-metallonium cations, whose structures and composition
s were confirmed by the data of elemental analysis and H-1, F-19, and C-13
NMR and IR spectroscopy. The results of studies by cyclic voltammetry demon
strated that oxidation of the compounds under study proceeded through Ill-e
lectron radical-cationic intermediates and that the mu-acyl Os-3-cluster fr
agment is a weaker electron-withdrawing group than the CHO group.
