Carpal tunnel syndrome after fracture of the distal radius is a well known
complication in adults, but in small children carpal tunnel syndrome is ext
remely rare. A case of carpal tunnel syndrome in a 5-year-old girl is prese
nted. She had a distal epiphysiolysis of the radius, which was treated cons
ervatively. Eight weeks after removal of the plaster of Paris she had clini
cal signs of carpal tunnel syndrome after excercise but without new injurie
s. Conservative treatment with a dorsal splint was effective, and all her s
ymptoms disappeared. So conservative treatment seems worth considering befo
re operation in similar cases.
