Residual stresses in dissimilar metal joints of copper and aluminium alloys
have been measured using an X-ray diffraction technique and estimated by f
inite element analysis. The effects of local tensile and compressive residu
al stresses in the joints on corrosion in artificial seawater have been inv
estigated, using a potentiodynamic polarisation method. Galvanic corrosion
at the dissimilar metal weld region may be enhanced by the additional effec
t of differential stress induced by welding.
