The thymidine isotopomer, [5'-C-13]thymidine, has been synthesized and its
Raman spectrum has been recorded and compared with that of normal thymidine
. Many of the Raman bands were found to remain nearly unchanged on going fr
om normal to 5'-C-13 species, whereas several Raman bands shift prominently
towards lower frequency. For reference, Raman spectrum of (CH3CH2OH)-C-13
has also been examined and analyzed on the basis of an ab initio MO calcula
tion. From the results, probable assignments are deduced for the O-5'C-4'C
bending (396 cm(-1)), O-5'C-4'C symmetric stretching (852 cm(-1)), O-5'C-4'
C antisymmetric stretching (1016 cm(-1)), 5'CH2 rocking (1029 cm(-1)), 4'C-
H bending (1066 cm(-1)), 5'CH2 scissoring (1481 cm(-1)), and 5'CH2 symmetri
c stretching (2934 cm(-1)) vibrations of the thymidine molecule. (C) 1999 E
