A new and simple way of engineering quantum superpositions of two coherent
states of a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field is presented. Our p
roposal, developed in the context of micromaser theory, exploits the passag
e of one atom only through a high-Q bimodal cavity supporting two electroma
gnetic modes of different frequencies.
