Activated carbons obtained from the pyrolysis (600-800 degrees C) of used t
ires have been synthesized and studied for n-butane adsorption. To obtain o
ptimal butane working capacity (BWC), higher burn-off was found necessary.
It was also found that higher pyrolysis temperatures (similar to 800 degree
s C) allow mesoporosity to develop more readily and furthermore this porosi
ty leads to higher BWC. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
