The chromatographic behaviour of alkali, alkaline earth and some trans
ition metals on the glutamic acid-bonded silica stationary phase was i
nvestigated using dilute solutions of perchloric acid as eluent. The e
ffect of different classes of organic modifiers as well as the influen
ce of temperature on the retention of cations were studied. Sorption h
eats for cations under different conditions were calculated. These inv
estigations allowed the chromatographic separation conditions, under w
hich either complex forming or ion-exchange mechanisms prevail, to be
determined.
