High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed for the sep
aration and determination of becliconazole, an imidazole derivative wi
th antifungal activity containing a stereogenic centre, and its impuri
ties. Chiral columns, containing carbamate of cellulose and amylose, w
ere used, The effects of the organic modifiers, ethanol and 2-propanol
, in the mobile phase, were studied. The HPLC method gave good perform
ances from qualitative and quantitative standpoints, allowing the enan
tiomeric ratio of becliconazole and its impurities to be determined. T
he assay showed linearity over the range 400-4000 ng ml(-1) for the im
purities and 400-4000 mu g ml(-1) for becliconazole.
