A combined field-zone-network (FZN) model which is based on the coupling of
field, zone and network models and proposed by the State Key Lab of Fire S
cience of China is modified with a volume-conservation method and is used t
o simulate two building fire cases. General discussions of the merits and l
imitations of field, zone and network models are given, and the necessity i
s pointed out to be due to the developing of the FZN model to tackle the pr
oblem of predicting fire processes for high-rise complex buildings. The res
ults of the predictions are reasonable and promising. Some areas of this FZ
N model are also identified as requiring further improvement. (C) 1999 Else
