Jm. Sabate et al., Dysphagia in patient with adult Down syndrome and repaired esophageal atresia: primary achalasia or achalasia-like syndrome?, GASTRO CL B, 23(5), 1999, pp. 573-576
Esophageal involvement is frequent in Down syndrome. We report a case of dy
sphagia in a 21-year-old patient with Down syndrome and repaired esophageal
atresia. Radiology, endoscopy, and manometry showed typical features of ac
halasia. The patient was treated first by botulinum toxin injection and aft
erwards by Heller myotomy with good result. The role of motor disorders ass
ociated with esophageal atresia or with primary achalasia in this patient i
s discussed.
