In energizing transmission lines, operators are often concerned with: the l
ength of line to be energized, the adequacy of on-line generation, and the
size of underlying load. There has been a need for a simple methodology to
readily address these issues and provide guidelines for the safe operation
of high voltage and extra-high voltage transmission lines.
In this paper, a simple and approximate approach for evaluating sustained a
nd transient voltages is presented. The sending- and receiving-end sustaine
d and transient voltages are determined for energizing lines of different v
oltage levels and lengths, energized by different sizes of generators, and
having different sizes of underlying loads.
