Abstract
In most institutions faculty members are expected to teach, research and pe rform community service. The emphasis placed on each activity is expected t o vary considerably between institutions and departments. To examine this e xpectation, a nationwide survey was made of both American Assembly of Colle giate Schools of Business (AACSB) institutions and nonAACSB institutions. p articipants rated SO publications for their value in reviews of research pe rformance, and responded to a series of questions pertaining to the importa nce of publication types on the merit compensation, promotion, and tenure p rocesses. These results were made available to the IS community, and approx imately 150 comments were obtained. The survey results and the comments sug gest that there might be some convergence in expectations of academic perfo rmance across institutions, as research-oriented institutions require bette r performance on teaching, teaching-oriented institutions require better pe rformance in research, and all institutions impose greater service demands on IS faculty.
