This review considers whether there are any potential training methods to e
nhance the development of perceptual skill in sport The efficacy of general
ized visual skills training programs and move cognitively-based interventio
ns are considered Although research has neglected to examine whether improv
ements in perceptual skill transfer to the performance concert, sport-speci
fic training programs which develop the Knowledge base underlying skilled p
erception are likely to be more effective than clinically-based visual skil
ls training programs. Video technology or simulation may be particularly ef
fective, when coupled with appropriate instructional techniques, in develop
ing perceptual expertise in sport. Several practical and theoretical issues
related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of perceptual traini
ng programs in sport ave discussed and future research directions highlight
ed.
