Abstract
The fluorescence properties of some pyrenylethylene derivatives capabl e of exhibiting twisted intramolecular charge transfer phenomenon have been studied as a function of solvent polarity. The solvent polarity dependent change in the fluorescence quantum yield has been interprete d in terms of intramolecular rotational relaxations. The trans --> cis photoisomerisation data of the compounds indicate that the twist arou nd the ethylenic double bond is accelerated in polar solvents.
